Oh yeah, I was just going from the short description (from the spell book generator) which mentions for one attack, having read the full discription it does say "that targets the subject" so it's useless against area of effect attacks. I wonder if that was intentional (to limit the power of the spell) or just poor wording.

Is there an Eratta or FAQ that clarifies that one? I always assumed it was poor wording (like so many other spells out there). If you allow it to work against AoE attacks, its perfectly balanced and somewhat useful.

Some groups do play it that way. Some groups stick to strict RAW. Consult your DM

The reason spells cast spontaneously can't be Quickened is because Quickening them involves applying a metamagic feat at casting time, which increases casting time to a full round action.

A spell which has an immediate action casting time is not having a metamagic feat applied to it, so you can cast it spontaneously with no issues.

Energy Aegis is more meant to counter the power of something like scorching ray, or seeking ray - though it doesn't even do very well against scorching ray, if you consider the separate rays as separate attacks.

Energy Aegis is terrible, because RAW it doesn't even work against Scorching Ray or Orb of <Energy> spells. (Because most ray and orb spells are "Effect:" spells, not "Target:" spells.)

Thank you; good catch. So RAW, it's not just AoEs that it is powerless against, it's most ray spells as well.
