So I took an improv class (improv as in Whose Line is it Anyway, not standup comedy) with a theme of improv and RPGs and it was a lot of fun. We did improv games and a fantasy game version of the one-page Honey Heist RPG and then a fantasy themed Kids on Bikes campaign. I was the least improv experienced person in the class but I have decades of experience with D&D and RPGs (started with Moldvay B/X and 1e in the 80s) and some had never played an RPG before. Lots of riffing, lots of first person roleplay, lots of jokes, a lot like games I have played in for decades. I found it a lot of fun and had a great time.

The guy running the class asked if anybody would be interested in a follow up 5e campaign that was taped and I agreed to be one of the players so this summer we started the campaign. Three people in the group have never played D&D before, others have played a bunch. In our session zero I helped out a little with 5e mechanics for characters and filling out character sheets for some of the new players.

The campaign theme was summer camp movie or series, but in a D&D fantasy world, the PCs are all teen staff at the camp.

There is a little language so not little kid appropriate.

Here is episode 1, enjoy. :)

Congrats. That’s awesome. Huge group. That’s gotta be tough on the referee.

What style of improv did you learn? Short form or long form? Did you use any texts like the UCB manual?

I have no experience with Youtube comments so I defer to your expertise.

It is a big group. For me as a player that means actively trying to be aware of spotlight timing and not take too much for myself but to still be an active participant and trying to be supportive and interactive with other players when I can in the roleplaying. In a small group it is easier to be more constantly involved and still have everybody participating.

One change for doing this in front of a camera knowing it was to be viewed was that I tried to restrain myself from my normal practice of leaning over to the person next to me to make jokes or in-character interactions or observations when the main spotlight was on the DM and another player with their interactions.

The improv in the class was short form, mostly quick games and thinking of different aspects of character and interactions and situations and such. We did not use any texts, I just learned the improv games as they were introduced on the spot and dove in.
