Improved Familiar options?

Bottom line: Real soon now, I'm gonna be eligible for and need a IMPROVED Lawful Good familiar (3.5 ruleset).

I'd prefer one that doesn't need a lot of attention IC or OOC. None of the group really likes annoying NPCs tagging along, and familiars, IME, can be quite annoying.

Most tolerant we've ever been in the past was when someone else was a Sorcerer, and I decided to play his toad familiar (when I wasn't otherwise occupied, and during "downtime") using Cheech Marin's voice. I considered and have tentatively rejected a pseudodragon, because I don't think it would like my character much -- our temperaments are radically different.

Right now, I'm kinda fixated on a Lantern Archon. (My character is pretty much LG to the hilt.) But a Lantern Archon is a little too powerful to be a familiar -- even an Improved Familiar.

So, any thoughts on other Improved Familiars appropriate for a serious (but not grim) and conscientious Lawful Good gnome wizard? Or perhaps a way to tone down a Lantern Archon to make it workable -- maybe knock off all its Celestial (package) abilities , and nix its ranged attacks? Would that work?

Ask your DM if you can get a Lantern Archon if you take both Improved Familiar and Leadership. He'll have to work out the Level Adjustment, since Lantern Archons don't have that listed in the 3.5e DMG.

If you get one as a Cohort, have it take Fighter levels (Weapon Focus: Ray, Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon Specialization: Ray, Improved Precise Shot, Improved Critical: Ray, etc.) or Rogue levels for a ranged touch Sneak Attack (again Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon Focus: Ray).
