well it says POSSIBILITIES.. is there any rules for how many max hd?

No rules on Maximums.
When considering it, I've always just leaned toward the druid idea that regular familiars can be up to the master's HD, and improved familiars can be master's HD +3.
Familiars are already awesome, no reason to make them any better than you have to.

There are no rules, and I wouldn't go by HD alone, rather take into account what the familiar can do for its master, and work something out with your DM. Some creatures are only so dangerous when encountered as monsters, but can be great familiars (Eyeball Beholderkin), while others are dangerous as monsters, especially when encountered in numbers, but aren't that great as - solitary - familiars (Stirge).
