Improved Trip Question

Zen

First Post
When a character with the improved trip feat misses his trip attempt, his opponets get a free counter trip on him. However, it does not say that this counter trip is any different than a normal trip (except that it is free) so, does that free trip atempt still provoke an AoOpp, or does it not provoke one, as with a disarm attempt against a failed disarm? (Disarm specifically says that the counter disarm does not provoke an AoOpp).

I have too many questions. :\ I should buy that dummies book.

My interpretation is that the AoO is generated by the touch attack followed by moving into the target's square. Hence why a whip used from a distance doesn't provoke an AoO.

So, no, a counter trip doesn't provoke an AoO.

Making a Trip Attack: Make an unarmed melee touch attack against your target. This provokes an attack of opportunity from your target as normal for unarmed attacks.
The AoO involved for triping is a result of the unarmed melee touch attack required to begin the trip, not the trip attempt itself.

If you win, you trip the defender. If you lose, the defender may immediately react and make a Strength check opposed by your Dexterity or Strength check to try to trip you.
The defender does not need to make a melee touch attack in order to counter-trip, he is already touching you as a result of your melee touch attack on him, therefore he does not provoke an AoO.

Hope that helps.
