In praise of the XP system

Thinking of flip side of the Ignore List poll . . . I'm thinking we need to sing the praises of whoever thought up the XP system. (Apologizes if someone already has.)

I just activated mine today and was surprised to discover people had been sending me "attaboys" for different messages, that I never saw before. (Silly me for not knowing about this.)

Anyhow, this seems like a good way to build community and "niceness" among users. Given the edition war history, and the way it's easy on the internet to forget everyone is a person -- and here, probably someone we'd like in real life -- this is just a super cool idea.

XP to whoever thought of XP!

On most other boards it is called "reputation." It's actually been around for a number of years. EN World was kinda late to the game. But yea, I like it too, especially putting their own little twist on it by calling it XP and adding levels.

I think it's a great idea. One question though. What ever happened to the Topic of the Week idea? I thought that was a pretty cool idea as well.

I've been involved with it since it was started about a year ago, and overall I like it, and especially like that there is no negative rep. The levels are interesting, overall, so good job on that.

However, I would prefer to see the comments more private. Putting them inline takes something away, I think.

You know, I don't think negative rep is a bad thing, as long as it is coming from someone with an established account. Most boards have a minimum post requirement before you are allowed to leave negative rep. This keeps people from creating a bunch of accounts just to leave someone they don't like a whole lot of bad rep.

EN World could have it's own unique take on negative rep though. As you earn negative rep, it doesn't hurt your XP, but rather it adds an undead template of increasing nastiness. Level 1 is skeleton. Level 2 is zombie. Level 3 is ghoul. Etc.

Of course some posters might think this is cool and intentionally try to get negative rep to increase their undead status. So maybe just make negative rep something most would consider undesirable. Maybe just score it as negative levels. Someone with more negative levels than XP levels would probably be someone who incites flame wars or says things people consider inappropriate (i.e. a troll).

Incidentally, I find it funny that level 10 is troll when a troll is generally considered a bad term on message boards.

Hey, I'm just happy I'm a gnoll now. I don't want to gain any more XP! Keep me here, please... gnolls are awesome.

For what it's worth, I really like the inline comments. It's a good way to see how the community feels about things without stretching the conversation out while people quote a poster above and then say "Agreed" like it adds to the conversation at all.
