In praise of the XP system

For what it's worth, I really like the inline comments. It's a good way to see how the community feels about things without stretching the conversation out while people quote a poster above and then say "Agreed" like it adds to the conversation at all.

I like it too. I'm neutral on whether it's better as private (only the giver and receiver can see) or public.

You know, I don't think negative rep is a bad thing, as long as it is coming from someone with an established account. Most boards have a minimum post requirement before you are allowed to leave negative rep. This keeps people from creating a bunch of accounts just to leave someone they don't like a whole lot of bad rep.

Whether negrep and inline XP comments separately are good ideas or not, I believe negrep with inline XP comments is a recipe for disaster. If someone thinks a post was unfairly hit with negrep, they'll retaliate with posrep or report the posted comment. I think there's a good chance of it spiraling out of control and bring down the general atmosphere of the board.

For what it's worth, I'm actually in favor of neither negrep nor inline XP comments.
