Peter Higgs, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics (and many other awards) for the prediction of the eponymous Higgs boson (particle and associated field), died yesterday at the age of 94.* The Higgs field is responsible for the mass of many fundamental particles in the Standard Model of particle physics, and Prof. Higgs's work made subsequent development of the Standard Model possible.
