... break glass?

Well, I guess it depends on how wrapped up I was in the current game and how interested I was in running something else.

It would not be beyond me to make the players make new PCs and have someone hire or otherwise importune them to go and recover their former PCs remains/investigate something they were looking into/etc.

After all, many adventures have "such and such are missing and we need you to find out why" moments; this would be the perfect opportunity for such an event.

In the case of a TPK, I immediately kill all of my players.

Have you been reading Dark Dungeons again? Be careful with that Total Player Kill, one of them might use real magic to defend him- or herself.

On a serious note (as serious as we get here, anyway) the last time I had a TPK, some of the party was not actually dead, and the party had allies somewhat nearby who came by to check later and rescued those that still lived. We continued on with a few new characters.

We used to restart the same adventure (let's say it was for 4th level characters) with characters of the appropriate level, and go from there. Maybe run across their picked clean corpses.

It depends, but in such a rare event as a TPK, the result is about evenly split between the following:

  • Switch DM's
  • Start a brand-new campaign in the same world
  • Play a completely different game

Continue the campaign with the same characters...only now it is interesting

Ah HA!

I voted three times. Once for switching DM's, once for a new campaign in the same world (which might happen depending on the TPK/reason/story/other details.

But I also picked "Other"> And here's the other that I most prefer.

Or there are other 'others'. But a truely fun one is THAT one. I enjoy occasionally "granting" forced ressurections on PC's. ALong with something else... good? Bad? Neutral? It all depends on my personal whim at the time and how the PC died.
