I must be missing something here. I look at the picture and immediately the word "tengu" pops into my head.

Yep, when they originally appeared in the 1E Fiend Folio they were named Kenku. In Oriental Adventures more mythologicaly accurate Tengu were introduced. Evidently now someone has decided to re-invent Kenku in a more larcenous vein to further seperate them from the original (except to D&D) asian version.

Yeah especially if they can make them better/equal to their other fiendish counterparts. Which it looks like they did.
