In your most recent game, were human variants allowed?

Variant Human was allowed, but bad grammar was not :P

Actually, for both my campaigns I seriously considered banning the base human. I don't like how much it changes the meta of character creation. If you use the array, it's absolutely terrible, because you'll end up with 4 odd ability scores. If you use point buy, it's easy to optimize by making all your ability scores even. If you roll (which is my group's preferred option), it becomes the default race if you roll 4+ odd ability scores, regardless of what you originally wanted to do. Since I use feats, I feel the variant Human does a better job of showing human's versatility and variability.

That's what I've done since the PHB has been out. Only variant humans and the "base" version is banned.

No, as feats are not available in my game except through joining factions, and that wasn't an option at the campaign's inception. In my campaign previous to the current one, there were no feats available at all and thus no variant humans either.

But we do use "alternate humans," which is a set of house rules one of my players shared with the group. It breaks humans down by the kind of region from which they hail (forest, mountain, arctic, desert, etc.) and gives them abilities appropriate to that.

I do not restrict the players from what they want to play either way. I merely let them decide what they want and remind the party to be mindful of what the others are doing.

While they are available, no one has wanted to play one. Or use feats for that matter. Almost all have been base human or dwarf with one tiefling to mix it up.

Basic human is underpowered unless you have some odd stats to make even, but I do not allow variant human in my games. I prefer feats to be available starting at 4th level (no crossbow expert + sharpshooter until you're 6th level, for instance). I'm considering the possibility of creating my own featless variant human, something more in line with the other races in terms of power.

In the most recent game, no. But that's because it is a demigod campaign where each player character is a demigod with powers taken and converted to 5th edition from Godbound RPG, and i didn't want to add more complexity on top of that with feats. In all campaigns before that they were allowed.
