Incantations

Well, in my campaign, they generally did a bucketload of research on how to enhance their rolls with outlandish components, detailed astrological charts, and a whole mess of action points. That's one of the reasons I adore the incantation system so much.

Incantations, are typically done by high level characters, My 6th level character has a Arcane Lore of 22, (Smart Hero and Savant and every feat that can boost a knowledge skill on) I doubt he will be doing any incantations for at least a couple more levels. But when he can he will rule the world  One thing is you have to plan on which incantations you want to use becuase most have two skills that are important. Also take a look at Synegry (sp?) Rules, many of the incantations are not ment to be done alone...

you can lower the DC of the incantation by making it's effects less lasting, requiring more time to cast, requiring expensive spell components, etc.
Each element of lowering the DC can be injected into the adventure. Rarely are the incantations performed "vanilla."

Personally... I feel it is something that my character is going to do in the future. It is something that he knows is going to be hard to obtain, something to strive for.... I think of it as the most powerful type of magic done by high level mages, or entire Cult of Maniacs... But those are my thoughts

Because Incantations are the only form of magic used in my campaign, taking the DC below 30 is not as big of a deal. Also, I'd suggest checking out The Game Mechanics "Modern Magic" which has a "Lesser Incantations" mechanic.
