Incantatrix, Persist and Extend

I'm not sure I want to do this to my DM, but I'm looking at the Incantatrix, and wondering if this would be allowed by RAW:

1. Assume 3rd lvl Incantatrix (metamagic effect)
2. Cast Persisted spell(s)
3. Each day, Extend the Persisted Spell.

Since Persisted spells last 24 hours, each Extend would double that duration, with only an increasing DC of the associated check.

Once your check fails, just cast the Persisted spell again.

(NB: combine this with Ultimate Magus who can apply the persist from his other casting class and you can Extend Persisted spells of lvl 4+)

Any opinions or ideas? (other than to turn away in disgust :) )

I think the real issue would be an issue of which one to apply first. If you apply extend first, your spell only lasts 24 hours. If you apply extend afterwards it would last 48 hours. Although I have seen people extending spells which last for 24 hours so that they last for 48 hours but the spell itself lasted this long not as a result of persist.

Sorry if the question was unclear, but what I actually wanted to know was:

If you have a Persisted Spell, it lasts 24 hours.
Assuming you have Metamagic Effect from Incantatrix, could you attempt to Extend the same spell day after day (spending 1 use of your allowed Metamagic Effect uses per day) attempting to double the duration?

Day 1: 24 hour
Day 1: Metamagic Effect(Extend): 48 hours
Day 2: Metamagic Effect(Extend): 96 hours
Day 3: Metamagic Effect(Extend): 132 hours

Or does this count as applying the same effect twice (even though it is through Metamagic Effect instead of regular Extend Spell)

Not sure if you would be able to do this or not, but if you could I would treat it as other doublings are in D&D and would be 24, 48, 72, 96.

IRC there's RAW vs applying the same feat twice to the same action/spell preventing extending an already extended spell.

Even so, I'm pretty certain metamagic adjustment(s) must be woven into the initial casting so can -not- be applied to ongoing effects ... so while you could reasonably extend/persist an effect to hopefully make it last 48hrs, you could not then apply either post-casting to augment the ongoing spell.

That's what I was looking for. Although if someone can give me a reference to the exact rule, that would help.

Normally, no. However, the Incantatrix class ability 'Metamagic Effect' allows you to do just that - apply an metamagic feat to an ongoing effect.
(Incantatrix is a Prestige Class from the Player's Guide to Faerun)

Thanks!

Ok, so no extening beyond 48 hours.

That would still allow alternating two spells with persist and extend, though:

day 1: persist spell 1
day 2: extend persisted spell 1
day 2: persist spell 2
day 3: persist spell 1(new casting)
day 3: extend persisted spell 2
etc.

Agreed. "Doubling" a spell effects in D20 don't expand geometrically. Think of every spell effect as having a "x1" multiplier already in place. Things that double it add one to that multiplier, rather than actually doubling it.

Now, extending a spell duration after the casting would, IMHO, add based on the time of the original casting, so adding "Persist" to a spell with a 24 hour duration won't affect the spell, whether you cast it at the start or at the end.
