Incursion: How to kill Mordenkainen?

jeffers

First Post
So I'm going to bring the Githyanki army from last year's Incursion features to Greyhawk. I need to kill off the Circle of Eight and their bald-headed patron to do it. Or get them outta the way, or something. They can't steal the PCs thunder, as they would certainly rise to meet the threat and then what would my players do?

Thoughts?

well have the main baddies locked in combat/ strategy with the main NPCs of the circle.

the PCs would then only be dealing with the underlings.

not that the underlings are necessarily weak. ;)

The Circle of Eight and Mordenkainen could be using the group as thier agents. The send the party off to handle what they percieve to be a small threat and they go off to handle a a major situation, and find that they fell into a trap.

Or even better. They fell into a trap and will be sent to the queen when it's known that it's safe to do so, Tenser (no longer a member of the circle of eight) rallies heros to his side to route the bad guys and eventually rescue the circle of eight. (Since he's Lawful Good, he makes for a good NPC)

The other two questions you might want to ask, what about Iuz and Rary.

Has Rary cut a deal with the Githyanki? Iuz may be just a demigod, but he was strong enough to through Vecna into Ravenloft, have they figured out away to by pass him? Perhaps the Lich queen wnts to steal her divinity at his expense?

Stay tuned and find out.

IMC the Circle of Eight is a strong component of my Greyhawk world. What you don't seem to understand about the circle is that they work behind the scenes. If they didn't come out and directly attack Iuz as a team, why would they with a smaller threat? Sure, one or two of the circle could get directly involved, you could even use that as part of the climax to the adventure -- so and so comes to aid the adventurers in the final confrontation, and is seriouly wounded and out of action for a while. This could lead to a long term relationship with a member of the Circle of Eight and feed the characters even more adventures.

To kill Mordy

I am also runing the same situation. Even thought Mordenkainen usually does not get directly involved, I think he would with a massive attack on the City of Greyhawk. If so the the Queen has preparded a trap that includes several Astra Dreadnoughts that have Anti-Magic cone that would make it very easy.

However, Mordy has a history of using Clones so another force need to find and invade his palace to do any with any clones.

Let me know how yours goes, we seem to have alot in common in regards to plot lines. I want the party to save the world not the NPC's.

Turn his own inventions against him in a way that will deeply disturb the players.

"He's just gone! One day, he walked into his Magnificent Mansion, and the next, the door to the Mansion was no-where to be found!"

What happened? Mordenkeinen's personal Magnificent Mansion has been turned into an isolated demi-plane by an Epic Psionic effect, which you don't have to justify in any Magical terms. The PCs must go rescue him, or he just shows up later if they never bother to worry about him.

Creepy Implication: M's MM is not totally safe against Epic threats! Oh no!

Have one of the Githyanki vessels land on him... you can have his booted feet sticking out the side... cue the halflings singing the wicked mage is dead... hmmm Deja Vu :D
