Infinite Crisis #1

I just got finished reading Infinite Crisis #1 from DC and I'm really excited about it. I haven't been this thrilled by the last panel of a comic since the issue of Astonishing X-Men where they brought Colossus back.

It picks up right at the end of DC's recent Infinite Crisis mini-series, continuing plots and threads begun in those books and starting to weave them together. One of the main focuses is on DC's Trinity: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, investigating the destruction of the Justice League's base on the moon and the disappearance of the Martian Manhunter.

They get into a pretty dramatic discussion over Wonder Woman having to kill a villain in cold blood who had unbreakable mental control over Superman. The gist of the argument from Batman and Superman is, "You shouldn't have done it. There's always another choice." Is it just me, or are Supes and Bats being pig-headed about this? I read the issues where the killing happened and I honestly didn't see another solution for Diana. She really had no choice.

Anyways, their discussion is interrupted . . . but I'll let you read that for yourselves.

The other two major threads involve the Freedom Fighters conducting an investigation that quickly has them way way way in over their heads and the return of some characters that I honestly never thought I'd see again. Like I said before, you really have to see the last panel of this issue to believe it!

in the words of Rocket Red HOKEY SMOKES

I'm obviously gonna have to go back and re-read the original Crisis because this is apparently a little more of a sequel then they let on.

Will be interesting to see how far they take the house-cleaning. And if any of the little clues in the artwork will pan out.

[sblock] like the bat signal shining directly onto Spectre's chest. in the past this would have been a subtle foreshadowing of bruces death. but in this day and age I'm sad to say it might be a red herring [/sblock]

I haven't read it yet, and I doubt I will since the two comics stores in my city tend to sell out rather quickly, but I'm not giving up hope...

I think it's understandable. Batman's refusal to take lives is part of his obsession, after all, and the one time Superman killed -- when he fought the alternate-universe General Zod toward the end of Byrne's run -- it left him with serious emotional scars. The belligerence is well in-character for both of them.

Spoilers please, I don't expect to have my hands in an issue in the foreseeable future.

Why, DC, Why can't you sell e-comics???

the highlights:

[sblock]

the Freedom Fights got offed. Phantom Lady, Human Bomb, Black Condor are all dead. Uncle Same is probably dead. We never saw what happened to Damage and the bad guys took the Ray with them.

Batrman, Superman and Wonder Woman had another conversation about how much they hate each other. Best line was Batman to Superman "They need to be inspired, and lets face it 'Superman' , the last time you really inspired anyone....was when you were dead."

4 mysterious figures watch over the various happenings, and eventually decide that they have to get involved. Next to last page, one says "This looks like a job for..."
"SUPERMAN!" It's the Earth 2 Superman, Earth Prime Superboy, Alexander Luthor and Earth 2 Lois Lane. (Last seen in original crisis if I'm not mistaken)

Combine this with the happenings of JSA Classified (dealing with Power Girls origin and Psycho Pirate) , Return of Donna Troy (now she remembers the multiverse too) , and Villains United (TWO lex luthors) , it looks like the Multiverse is coming back for at least a short visit.

Geoff Jones interview at Newsarama says the Damage is alive, which is a good thing. His story has yet to be explored to the depth it needs to be. Interesting that he was hanging around with them. Last I saw of him was in New Titans; he was off at an Indian reservation where Roy Harper used to live, trying to get his head back together. I wonder what they're going to use Ray for? To power some machine like Firestorm in Villany United #5? Or... hmm. I wonder if you used him to power up Dr. Light, who is a central figure in all this... that would Be Bad. Hoping Ray doesn't die; he's someone else that needs to step back into the spotlight.

The last panel? Totally blew me away. I certainly can say I didn't see that coming. Stuff related to it that's happened elsewhere. Harbinger died back in the Supergirl arc in Superman/Batman. Pariah apparently dies in Villany United #6.

Good to see that Captain Marvel is alive and well after his plumet. I wonder how this affects the other Family members? Freddy seems ready to rock in Outsiders.

Here's a link to an excellent article on Newsarama that completely captures how I feel about this comic book. The article gives an overview of DC's multiverses and Crisis on Infinite Earths and also includes an excellent editorial on the character who shows up at the end.

It's spoiler-filled, so if you haven't read the book yet, you may want to wait to read the article. However, I honestly think that this article is a must-read for all comic book fans.
