Initiative Question

Say a character falls in combat, disabled, and later durring the same combat is healed back up to positive hp. Should he re-roll his initiative for this same combat, or should his initiative stay the same when he awakens? Sounds like it makes sense. He was out of it for a while after all.

We usually just keep the same initiative, for simplicity's sake. In fact, I've had a guy die and be resurrected before his initiative came back around again.

I suppose you could have them reroll, but I don't really see the point. once you're in the middle of combat, intiative doesn't matter.

I always played that they go on their original initiative. They are disoriented and considered flat-footed until they have acted again.

This is not correct. By definition, you can only be flat-footed at the beginning of an encounter. Plus, why would you be disoriented? When you are healed from below 0 to above 0, there are no side effects that would cause disorientation.

First of all it may not be core rule but at my game table it is more then correct and here is why.

You fall below 0 hit points you are disabled and bleeding to death. I view this as meaning you have litterally fallen. This also causes you to drop anything that was in your hands.

Then a cleric heals you and you're standing upright again.

1) You have to stand up - MEA
2) You have to pick your things up (kind of like drawing a weapon)- MEA

That is a full round of action. Of these two things one provokes an AoO. Rather than just allow the AoO I deam that the character is flat-footed. The disorentation comes from not really paying attention while you ready yourself for battle again.

You can do anything you want at your table, of course.

Yes, when you go down, you have to get back up. By the rules you are still not flat-footed or disoriented. That was my only point. You can rule 0 it if it makes more sense for your group. :D

Check your PHB by core rules it is ''as if you were never reduced below 0 hit points'' - very poor wording as far as I'm concerned.

What's so poor about them? They certainly mean that he is not disoriented or flat-footed.
