Just last night we were reminiscing about our mass combat/fief adventures in 2e. It got to the point where we were so high level that everyone had a fiefdom and castle and quite often we just played against each other. One guy had a castle of pure adamantite, 100's of feet high on solid adamantite pillars. That is, until another player dug a secret tunnel to all the pillars underground and set loose about a hundred starving rust monsters.

And then there was the time one player set a Basilisk loose in one guys castle while he was away :D

Anyway, that left me with a hunger for a 3e campaigners type of book. Has this been done before? Maybe thats Montes secret project?

I could perhaps market the Avalon campaign setting with the stronghold rules included; of course that might make it really long...

or do you think I should try to make both an Avalon setting AND the Stronghold rules separately? The reason I ask is that RangerWickett and Morrus said they would be unlikely to publish campaign settings...

Actually, maybe doing both would be the best idea. A sourcebook that revolves around mass combat and stronghold building rules could include a sizeable portion devoted to an sample setting, kind of like GH is considered the baseline D&D world. Maybe all your sample strongholds and mass combat rules could use references to your Arthurian campaign setting book. They'd be complements to each other, and that could help you get past resistance from publishers about putting out another campaign setting.

I would think that you could put out the stronghold book (with Arthurian teasers) first, kind of like Sword & Sorcery did with the Creature Collection and Relics & Rituals. The stronghold book could help drum up interest for campaign setting's later publication. You could also put a few alternate rules in the stronghold book if you found room, but for me personally, I always appreciate d20 publishers who do not make their alternate rules supersede the Player's Handbook. Having "variants" is the way to go for alternate magic, et. al at this point.

Again just my two cents :),

#1, "Stronghold rules, Mass Combat, managing fiefs, etc." has a majority of the votes - out of four options. That's a clear sign...

Personally, I'd love to see rules for managing fiefs and running castles, and mass combat couldn't hurt - though I'm told the rules in Mongoose's Quintessential Fighter are quite good.

Personally, I would love a King Arthur d20 sourcebook.

Avalanche Press is going to be coming out with one (called I, Mordred), but it will be reversal of the story - it turns out Mordred was good, Arthur was bad.

Nah. Knowing Avalanche, it will turn out that Arthur has breasts.

Some good, well thought guidelines on economics, politics, and running feifs and strongholds and kingdoms might be nice. Some extra information on how strongholds stand up to fantastic story elements (magic, elementals, critters with obscene amounts of strength, etc) could also be useful.

I've always had a problem with mass combat. If I want to play a tactical wargame, I'll play a tactical wargame. If I'm playing an RPG, I want the story more focused on the PCs personally than on the armies. I've only seen one system that does this well, and it doesn't actually require any new rules.

Fiefs and Strongholds

I'm running a campaign now where the characters are in the 8th-10th level range, and the 'larger picture' is becoming important for both roleplaying, plot and 'crunchy rules' reasons. If I had some idea that a product was coming out that went in approximately the right direction, then I might not have to spend days and weeks converting the rules for dominions and mass combat from the Companion Rules (which I just snagged on eBay for cheap). Then again, a six month development cycle won't do me any good, either...

If you ask me..

Stronghold/domain/fief creation & management rules all the way. Something I can use as a guide for how much income/obligations/challenges I'd deal with running anything from a small village to a city would be perfect. Especially if the rules are based around populations governed.

Throw in mass combat rules for when my neighbours lead their armies into battle against me & I'd be in heaven.

A detailed Avalon setting/rules set would be nice, but there are plenty of settings already available.

Rulership guides though. I'm not aware of anything comprehensive even in existance (not counting Birthright which was a special case). That seems a pretty big hole in the market to me.
