Input wanted: What made the gods mad?

The gods, despite what we may think of them to the contrary, are in fact evil, cruel, tyrannical, uncaring and malevolent. All of them. Even the ones whose faith say are lords of light and benevolence. They just keep it more hidden than the others.

They don't so much hate mortals, as they do see us toys, slaves, and food. They don't care about mortals enough to hate them, or get jealous of them, any more than you or I might get jealous of an insect.

Long ago in ages past, the gods placed their mark upon the continent and waited for a mortal with enough ambition to find it. Then, pulling the strings of men from beyond, twisting their will, they drove the lands into a terrible war, lasting hundreds of years. The fighting waxed and waned over time, until one day their mark was found by one foolish enough to take it up once he recognised it for what it was. Into the mark he poured his will to conquer, and the gods responded, making him mighty. Fate always seemed to twist in his favor, demons hiding in human shells guided him in the arts of war, shaping him into the most brilliant general of his age. His armies swept across the lands, shattering those who stood in their way, and bringing those who survived to heel.

On the night the capstone of his conquest was to be lain in place, under a blood-red moon, the man was visited by a divine messenger, and made an offer: abandon all he had worked and fought for in exchange for his acendancy to the right hand of the gods... or to refuse, and have the gods withdraw all the gifts they had granted him over the years.

The final battle went well, his strategy as flawless as ever. The city fell, the emporer and his wife were put to the blade, and a raucous victory cry swept through the ranks... but the Conquering General was nowhere to be found.

Overhead, the crimson moon grew dark, like a great eye in the heavens gliding shut. One by one, the stars turned their backs to the world, and a quiet darkness blanketed the lands.

It was then, that the gods fed upon that which their pet general had turned his back on.

Each land has its own spirit that empowers the life that dewlls within. Deserts are the results of the spirits forsaking their charge or being captured or killed. The chief god of the continent was slain by mighty powers and all was laid waste.

The gods, while already mad, were hungry.
And ate it.
But now they slumber until they should again awaken and hunger.
Yup, this is the one I'll vote for. Definitely.

I also like the whole "we destroyed the earth ourselves but we'll blame it on the gods" concept. Kinda "Dark Sun"ish, or even Greyhawkian (Rain of Colorless Fire, anyone?).

It's only believed to be the gods due to the mind numbing destruction. What actually happened was two pre-cursor races detroyed each other with nuclear weapons, eradicating all their technology and civiliaztion.
