Insect Plague 3.0

Hey all,

i have an question with an situation in my game :)

Insect Plague was cast but i am doubting about the spell area..

It say's in 3.0:
Effect: Cloud of insects 180 ft in diameter

Does this mean, 90 feat each way from point of origin, or 180 feat each way from point of origin.. and does this also mean upwards and downwards?

I am asking this cause an player casted the spell in an small empty building, if it is how i think it is they may not survive so..

Thanks for the info :)

180 ft diameter means 90 ft radius, so 90 ft from point of origin.

I don't have the 3.0 rules, so I don't know what the rest of the spelldescription is. This means I can't tell you whether this also means up and down, although the use of diameter suggests it doesn't.

What is the AOE specified? is it a spread, a burst, or something else?
Knowing this might help.

You seem to be confusing diameter with radius.

The radius of a circle is the length from the center of the circle to a point on the circle.

The diameter, is twice the distance of the radius.

Therefore, to me it seems that the spell creates a cloud of insects, with a radius of 90 feet, from the point of origin.

I'm not too sure about height (or depth), as I don't have my books handy, but isn't there some other kind of information you can infer from the "cloud" description in the section describing spell effects in general? Something about them being 10 or 20 feet in height (IIRC)?

What this has to do with small buildings, is beyond me.

Insect plague: great outdoors, suicide indoors. It's one of the balancing factors of the spell is that you can't cast it in a large number of situations lest you engulf your own party. Great for wars and outdoor adventures, though.

Spell description:

Insect Plague
Conjuration (Summoning) [see text]
Level: Clr 5, Drd 5
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 full round
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Effect: Cloud of insects 180 ft in diameter
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: No
A horde of insects swarm in a thick cloud when the character casts this spell. The insects limit vision to 10 feet, and spellcasting within the cloud is impossible. Creatures inside the insect plague, regardless of Armor Class, sustain 1 point of damage at the end of each round they remain within. Invisibility is no protection. All creatures with 2 or fewer HD are driven from the cloud at their fastest possible speed in a random direction and flee until they are at least 100 feet away from the insects. Creatures with 3 to 5 HD flee as well, though a Will save negates this effect. (This urge to flee is an extraordinary fear effect.)
Heavy smoke drives off insects within its bounds. Fire also drives insects away. A single torch is ineffective against this vast horde of insects. Lightning, cold, and ice are likewise ineffective, while a strong wind (21+ mph) that covers the entire plague area disperses the insects and ends the spell.

Ok so i guess its 90 feat from point of origin, that gives them an chance of survival :P

Long live players who only read short descriptions, and not the total spell description..
