Insider

When you put it that way it does sound like a reasonable deal.
I hadn't heard that the Char Gen utility was that close to release. I knew it was in Beta, but I was afraid it would languish there. If it's a couple months away from working, then I think I'll go ahead and subscribe.

The magazines and the bonus tools are probably worth $60 a year to me. The Compendium might be worth the money too, but the free preview seems a bit...cumbersome.

According to Digital Insider #17, the closed beta will probably open up next week and a new download with bug fixes and additional content will soon be available. It looks like WoTC is going to add more levels in January. So far its looking good and I don't think that the recent layoffs of the digital management will affect the roll-out too much.

I've been wondering the same thing, but I've been too tied up in other threads to post the question. Thanks DV.

Here is my major misgiving. If I plunk down $60 for the year subscription, and it takes 9 months for everything to be functional, I'm going to feel like I got hosed.

If Shroomy is right and they raise the price as the features come online, then I'll feel like I was rewarded for signing on early, but I'm not sure I'd be able go with a follow up subscription if the price got much higher.

I have a concern that I'm buying a bag of "magic beans". I haven't followed the DDI thing very closely, as I came to 4E a bit later than most, but I seem to recall that the thing was supposed to be up and running months ago.

I guess I'm just not 100% confident that DDI will be fully working before my sub would run out.

Does any of that make any sense?

Yeah, your welcome (I guess), the thing is for me, I'm 14, and I make enough to pay $60 a year, so my mom makes me. But I'm already paying $30-60 a year for something called Shonen Jump, and $90-120 a year is a little overwhelming. Also, I don't particullarly like 4E, but the creator stuff woulbe godly for me ...

If you're stapped for cash and don't particularly like 4e, I wouldn't recommend buying a subscription. The Character Creator software, while very cool, is strictly 4e.

It looks like WoTC will be doing free weekly previews for their monthly releases through the D&D website. In addition, the DDI previews serve two purposes, first they get people to subscribe and they begin to generate word of mouth for new releases several months in advance. Just look at the druid thread.

So viral marketing? I suppose it makes sense. I remember when they previewed the 3e rogue in Dragon and we all went crazy over it (even though only one of us bought the magazine).

Say what you will about WoTC's overall 4e marketing efforts, I think they got the viral marketing thing down pat.

I took the plunge for the Druid, so I'm currently annoyed over the preview being only 3 levels. However ... I'm really liking the Character Builder, and Dragon and Dungeon content has been impressive even pre-subscription, that has only improved.

Hopefully Friday's Ampersand will have a couple of more levels (maybe one build continuing up to Level 10, kind of like a shorter bard preview). I'm curious to see more of the druid prior to March.
