To sum up: Versimilitude.
That is, anything that promotes the feeling of being there. Props, no distractions, good role-playing... let versimilitude be your watchword, and your intangibles will be very tangible.
Getting your goals in synch is also important. If the players want something or want do something in a particular way, the DM should be able to accommodate them; but the players should also be willing to follow the DM's guidelines.
Communication of information is important. The more information you have available to you, the better. Whether it's noting down the pertinent abilities of a spell or weapon, or making it clear just which orc you're smashing, keeping things clear will make the game run faster and add to versimilitude (nobody stops to check their notes or the rulebook in the movies, right?).
