Intelligent weapons question

First Post
Hi guys, recently I acquired a intelligent " +1 returning spear". Thus far it hasn't been that difficult to handle or deal with, but the weapon I was using before and still have is a much better weapon. Now my question is this, if I was to stick the intelligent weapon into a bag of holding does that stop it from annoying me, allowing me to use my other weapon without the spear causing me a lot of problems down the road (because it won't let me use any other weapon but it) or will it still be able to sense what is going on outside of the bag of holding. I would think it wouldn't (because it's in a non dimensional space) but that why I'm asking your take on the matter. I wasn't sure how things worked inside of a bag if holding. I don't know any of the ability scores the spear has, I do know what abilities it has and it has a ego of 20

How does it communicate? If it's telepathic it will know. Empathic, maybe not. If it communicates by speaking, no.

Remember that since the 3.0/3.5 changeover, bags are "non-dimensional", not "extra-dimensional". The difference is that "non-dimensional" means that it doesn't take up any space. It's still there, just as if you had it in a scabbard or normal bag, it's just that now it's a bag that doesn't bulge on your hip.

Yes it speaks Telepathic, and to answer the first reply I figured I could just wrap the tip up with cloth or something along that line to keep it from puncturing a hole in my bag.

This is my first dealings with a intelligent weapon, what would you guys suggest or normally do with one. If it cause you problems.

What are my options to get rid of if need be.

Is it just simply make my will save and throw it away, knowing it will hunt me down or have it destroyed.

We do have a artificer in the group.

Well, you should treat it well, take it for walks, and care for it. Be sure to polish your spear nightly, if you know what I mean.

Just for once I'd like to see an intelligent weapon that doesn't try to mess with the poor PC who ends up finding one. Just a fun little companion who'd actually be useful.

Intelligent weapons are problematic for players, because they usually end up being an extension of the DM's plan for the campaign. Whatever the player might try to do to prevent it the DM will want to fight back so he can get to the plot line he had the sword there for.

The best intelligent weapons we ever had were played out by other players, not the DM.

What would I do in your situation? I'd try to befriend the weapon. Make it trust your character. Try to make it understand that you can use other weapons occasionally, when the situation requires it. After all, a fork isn't that useful when you really need a spoon. :p

Although it would NOT have first-hand knowledge of what occurs "outside" while its contained within the Bag of Holder, it could(?) likely quickly "mind-scan" you via the telepathic bond once released and react accordingly.

The problem isn't with Intelligent weapons per-se, but rather most(?) generally are created by individuals with far-above average Intelligence/Wisdom scores to be worthwhile companions and thus typically dominate the unfortunate individual stumbling over them later; which seems to be the case in question ... thus a potential recourse is Intelligence/Wisdom boosts to equalize matters; at least long enough for you to sever the unwanted relationship.

Alternately, perhaps one of the other PC's notices the problem and conveniently hires someone to steal it from you (obviously without your prior knowledge to avoid the spear learning of the plot).

Of course if you WANT to keep the spear then perhaps approaching it from a different angle, rationally arguing while you appreciate its abilities/etc, your own fighting style(s) are currently centered around your other weapon type, and thus while you WILL continue using that weapon for the foreseeable future, intend to develop the skills necessary to properly wield it when events warrant.

Lining a bag with lead is around 10gp (Complete Adventurer or Scoundrel) I think??

That should block it's perception/communication. It's probably going to be pretty mad when you finally let it out though.

Thanks guys for all the valuable info, i do have a high INT-22, but my WIS is lacking with a 14. I was thinking of getting a periapt of wisdom to boost it and lining the bag with lead sounds like a option. As far as the spear/PC relationship we have so far gotten along. It has a very battle driven mentality to it. Which i know is going to the death of me, every time there is is a combat it doesnt allow me to hesitate, it tries to force me into the battle no matter what the enemy might be. As i stated before, this is a new chapter in The game for me.

"Oh my beauty, I wouldn't want you defiled, using you on these disgusting creatures. You are my beloved, not some clunky metal tool to be used to deal with trash."
