Interrupt a Long Rest: Interrupts the Whole Night?

Stalker0

The rules mention you can long rest only once a day, and provides ways in which a long rest is ruined.

If a long rest is ruined, can I still attempt it again that day, or do I have to wait another day to get the benefit?

In other words, is it....you can get one SUCCESSFUL long rest per day?

That's how I read it, if you are interrupted it resets the clock and you need to mulligan it. Notice the line about how if your long rest is interrupted "you must start the rest over." Which would suck if the beasties ambush you at hour 7. :)

Yes, you only get one successful rest. If your rest in interrupted, you must start over, and you can keep starting over until you get 8 hours of downtime.

The How to Play does say "take more than", not "benefit from" ...

Id say if you're interrupted ... got to wait, as written, but i dont think that is the intent

The rule should be changed anyhow - maybe you need extra time, but restarting? That's crazy. Not that it's hard to houserule, but still, might as well change it.

Or does anyone feel this is a good rule?

I think that's something that the people complaining about long rest giving all HPs and hit dice back didn't notice.

In most cases, it is impossible to get a full night rest in a dangerous place. A single random encounter (or a single kobold, purposefully disrupting the rest) ruins the night. You'll only get a peaceful, full night's sleep after retreating to town or other friendly, secure location.

In my opinion, it balances out nicely.

Players: we're going to take a Long Rest *assigns watches etc*

DM: ok, after 7 hours and 59 minutes, you get ambushed, so the Long Rest didn't count - sorry!
