Introducing a Child to D&D

Lately, thou, we've been playing Microlite20 (1, 2). Most of our games have been on the fly lately with the new 1 month old baby. We game when we can!

Wow your one month old plays using the microlite20 rules, I'd heard the rules were simple, but I didn't realise how simple. Do you think you could persuade the little one to write a review?

The result is "Heather's First Adventure". Let me know what you think!

That's great, thanks! I've been planning to initiate my six-year-old daughter soon, and I've been needing to come up with adventure ideas. I'll tweak this, of course (dead humanoids and undead, even mindless ones, are too creepy to start her off with, I think; and I want to avoid the take 10/20 confusion for now), but I like how you've emphasized the learning process.

Plus, you gave me another idea! Saving a unicorn from some goblins, that sounds good...

Try to find some old Endless Quest game books for her to read and play. They should be on her level and give her an idea of what game-play is like.

Not that I think about it (I think your discussion about the philter of love was what made me think of it) TOON! would be a great game for introducing kids into gaming. Cartoons where you are actually in the cartoon. I could see a lot of kids being interested in that. And the rules are pretty light as well, especially compared to D&D.

On a separate note, why did you decide to use the 1d10 rolled every round for initiative Raven? Just prefer the "old" way of rolling initiative or some other reason?

AHHHHH! Spinning beach balls of death! Otters hit by flying javelins!

Boy did I DESPISE this game ... but I never even considered how much a child might enjoy it. Might be interesting....

I second (or third???) the endless-quest books as a good way to introduce kids to rp'ing, though.

I assume you mean the trapdoor at the end. :D

No, the stuck door in area 2.

It says you need to make an ability check to open it, but there's nothing to tell the DM what the DC is. It has a Break DC of 13, but no Open DC...

Yes. Those skeletons have been interred for a long time withou visitors, and they are just not as spry when they start moving as they used to be.

Cool :)

Very nice! Having done something similar (though a little more in depth) for my own kids, I can appreciate even the "small bit of work" (cut and paste) that you did to create this. Actually, if you went back and edited it (there are a few places where the words don't quite match up or a word was dropped) you could probably publish as a free or VERY low cost PDF aimed at the beginner market.
Very good work indeed.
(BTW mine are 17 and 13 now - my oldest started playing at 4)
