Introducing D&D to someone?

Sirin

First Post
I had seen a thread related to this one posted; but my situation is somewhat different. I regularly frequent these boards but this is my first post. I am a college student, and frequently play D&D/RPGs at school. My father also has an interest in playing these games, or at least learning how they work; but he doesn't want to play with me as the DM because he feels like he is playing against me. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can introduce him to how playing table-top d&d feels? He has played the old gold box games and neverwinter nights and all of those PC games, and I'd like to introduce him to what table top is like...

Have him sit in on a session, see what it's like. It works. Just, if you're going to do this, it helps to make sure you only have your sane players around that night. :)

I once tried to introduce my girlfriend to D&D, but made the mistake of running a game with one of my more annoying players, and the session became a shouting match. Needless to say, she got a bad impression. It wasn't until she happened upon a small session in my dorm room that she got a better idea about the game (though she still thinks I'm going to grow out of it someday. :) )

Alternatively, if you have the movie "Knight Chills" the first half hour has some pretty good scenes of what game sessions are like. Of course, the next hour (the cutting of of fellow gamers by the spirit of an obsessed player) is fictional, and not like any session I've ever been in. You could show him those scenes.

On a side note, welcome. I'm kind of a lurker, so I don't know if I'm the best person to welcome you here, but no one else seems to have replied, so...howdy.
