Ioun Stones: How many can you have at once?

Simple question. The title says it all, how many ioun stones can you have orbiting your head at once? I can't find it mentioned anywhere... so I would guess that it is either just one, or as many as you can afford. What is the correct answer?

There is a lich NPC in the FRCS who has a couple dozen of the little cranial satellites.

I don't want any of those... how stupid does that look, anyways, to have one of them buggers swirling around your head all the time; and everyone can simply blow them away and you have all the precious money wasted.

So Piratecat, how many ioun stones did you give Congenio Ioun when he turned up in your campaign?

Nineteen or twenty, although that was his everyday array. He uses more when arrayed for battle.
