How do these two products compare. Is IH an expanden book of iron might? Will boim give me the combat focus that IH has in "ordinary" D&D"? Or are they just two completely different animals?

From what I understand the BoIM was intended to drop into a D&D game.
IH is designed as a seperate rules system than D&D.
The stunts and challenges you can do in IH were likely based off of the previous BoIM ideas. The IH options seem much more free form than the example ones I saw in BoIM.

If you are looking for a way of spicing up your D&D combat, then BoIM is probably more what you want.
If you are looking to focus your whole game away from the magic items and preponderance of spell casting, then IH would be worth checking out.

ken-ichi's anaylsis is spot on. I was intrigued by IH when it was first announced, but since I was looking for systems or subsystems to add to my campaign which uses the Conan RPG as the core rules set. Since IH is designed to produce power-levels on par with default D&D characters (just without the magic items), I ended up passing on it.

BoIM, on the other hand, turned out to be just what I was looking for. Combat options that I could insert into my game in a plug-n-play fashion.

I highly recommend it.

Ken-ichi and Azgulor are right, but I'd like to add something.

The Book of Iron Might mostly is about feats (some new types of feats) and the maneuver system, which is basically an attack with different effects. For example, you could create a maneuver that disarms and knocks down an opponent, or you could re-create the special combat actions of regular D&D (Disarm, Trip, Sunder, etc). It also has a stunts system (that has also appeared in previous Mearls' works) and some combat oriented uses for skills.

Iron Heroes is a whole different game, but with the same origin as the BoIM (although the stunt rules presented in Iron Heroes are better, IMHO).

For my D&D games I allow the Book of Iron Might, and I also incorporate the stunts and zones rules from Iron Heroes.

You can read about the BoIM maneuver system and the Iron Heroes's zones rules in the following pages:
