Irony. Diplomats with Greatswords.

I made a 1st-level paladin whose emphasis is on diplomacy. He has a 14 Charisma, full ranks in Diplomacy, and the feats Skill Focus (Diplomacy) & Negotiator. He has +11 on his Diplomacy checks. (But he also wields a greatsword, with 14 Strength.)

Our current adventure is pretty heavy on the intrigue/social interaction side of D&D. We've had 3 very short combats in 3 game sessions.

For all of my Diplomacy checks so far (maybe a dozen), I have not rolled above a 9 on the d20. My diplomatic attempts have failed on all but the most basic and simple level.

Yet, in a total of 10 rounds of combat, my diplomatic paladin has scored a hit and killed the enemy 10 times.

Using baseball as an analogy:

For 12 diplomatic ups at bat, I'ved struck out several times, walked a couple times, and maybe got a base hit once.

But for 10 combat ups, I've knocked the ball out of the park, every. . . single. . . time.

Ironic.

It happens and it can be fun to use this to move the Paladin along. For instance he might loose faith in his own ability to negotiate, but jump the gun to the greatsword a little too soon.
