Is 4e bringing new players to the game?

That does look good, but I would think that the goal was to have PHB1 numbers, since PHBII is really part of a trickled release of the core rules.

What were the PHB I numbers.
That's quite a big assumption.

I would be stunned if WotC expected PHB2 to do anywhere near as well as PHB1. Seriously, it would be a crazy expectation.

They expect it to sell better than Draconomicon and Open Grave, I'm sure. Probably, they'd like it to be up there around Adventurer's Vault. But it's still a supplement - a core supplement, to be sure, but a supplement nonetheless.

I know you want to claim failure if it doesn't have sales numbers as astronomically high as PHB1, but the marketing folks at WotC are at least this bright.

Obryn, I do not want 4E to fail. I may not be a huge fan of the system, but that doesn't mean I want the D&D flag ship to crash and burn. In fact, there are many things about the new edition I admire...it just isn't my cup of tea. The success of 4E, will impact the hobby as a whole. If 4E fails we are all in trouble. And my post was meant as a compliment to the design team not an attack. Even though I prefer 3E, I think they have a better business strategy out this time around. Releasing the core rules in chunks, is actually a brilliant way for wizards to keep making money. I am just at a point in my life, where I can't invest tons of cash into a system, which is why I had hoped they would release a solid core without any splats (but I knew that was a pipedream). That said, I can't blame them for trying to make money so they can stay in the game and keep paying their employees. If 4E is a success, it would suprise me if the PHB II doesn't outsell their previous splat books and supplements. I wouldn't expect it to equal the sales of PHB I, but I would expect it to get pretty close. And for what it is worth, I hope it does.
