I think indexes just make everything easier, especially when looking things up at the table or trying to do so in a hurry. A well put together index can really make a difference when looking up various rules, etc.

How I wish that was true.
It IS true.

Look in the MM. First page of the book has the ToC(alphabetical) AND the By Type listing. LAST page has By CR listing.

MMII has the same.

Fiend Folio, too.

And MMIII.

Heck, even the BoED has a listing by CR in the back of the book. The ToC lists the monsters in alphabetical order. Draconomincon, too. I think that's enough that I have to flip through to prove the point that it IS true.

This is almost seeming like another case of WotC can do no right.

It might be true if you limit your discussion to WotC books. But take a look at Creature Collection Revised--no by type listing and no by CR listing.

Hmm. Just for the record, I really like WotC books. I think that they are the best on the market, hands down, both in terms of content and physical quality.

That being said, we as consumers have a responsibility to hold them accountable when they do things we don't like, such as dropping indices or getting lax with proofreading.

Could have sworn this thread was really created because of a lack of an index in recent WotC books...

The thread was created to take a poll about whether or not people want indices in their books. WotC isn't even mentioned until the 7th post.

I sent a note to customer service myself. Whether it has an effect or not is immaterial - they at least know of the dissatisfaction from a substantial set of gamers, most of which are DM's, from what I've seen of ENWorld demographics in past years - and DM's are the ones buying the books that need the indexes. :)

I prefer indices myself, however, I hate ones that don't have the information I'm looking for indexed, or are done poorly. I'd rather no index to a poor index.

I would reverse that. I would prefer a poor index to no index simply because of the fact that just because it's a poor index to me doesn't mean someone else won't find it useful. Example, some people see the PHB index as truly lacking whereas I see it as truly useful. You can't appease all people all the time but at least give them a tool that will be useful to a lot of them.
