Is cannibalism (or rather, eating the flesh of sentient beings) inherently evil?

I'm playing a Tribal Cannibal in a Greyhawk game. He is Chaotic Neutral, a Barb 2/Fighter 1 Halfling, follower of Kord, and he eats dead people. However, this is not done in a malicious manner; he doesn't kill people and eat them, he waits for others to kill people, then eats them. It is forbidden for a member of the tribe to eat someone they have killed, for any reason. This is because if one of them kills someone then eats them, it could be viewed as killing them with the intention to eat them. This would make them no better than Gnolls, Orcs or any other savage humanoid species that kills and eats people. However, it is perfectly acceptable for them to eat someone that another party (or non-tribal-member party member) has killed, or someone who has died of natural causes, or someone who has died in an accident, or any other number of ways, with two exceptions.

His tribe views the eating of the dead as a sign of respect, of reverence for the accomplishments that the person achieved during life. They follow their beliefs as a matter of religion, believing that to not eat a person after they die is to waste the life of the person and the body of the person; they believe that by eating the brains, heart and liver (among other things) of the dead is to gain the knowledge, courage and wisdom that person had. This pleases Kord, who cherishes the strong and those who seek to get stronger. They understand that not everyone believes the way they do, but they think it is out of simple ignorance of what the dead really want. They believe that when you die, you gain the knowledge of Kord and how it applies to death, and then you want to have your body used for a good purpose, and seeing that most bodies are wasted is a thing of great sadness for the dead. The tribe seeks to right this wrong wherever possible, eating the bodies of the dead, and pleasing the people in the afterlife.

The character is relatively new, and the first situation where his beliefs might apply has occurred. The Party is in Jail for attacking two men and killing one of them; and the cleric doing the interrogating has said that the Paladin who started the fight will bear the brunt of the responsibility. Execution is a definite possibility, and the character has requested to spend some time with the Paladin to approach her on the subject of getting her permission to eat her after she dies, if she is executed, or if she dies later on. The player has stated that she is a very open-minded Paladin. I am, however, concerned about what the other Party Members will think. Is the eating of sentient beings inherently evil, or is there room for a tribe like the one I've described above without being evil?

Hey, it prevents the corpses from being animated as zombies by necromancers, at least. ;))

Evil? IRL? Certainly not. It's all a matter of culture really. Though if your other party members remain "in character" and not let their personal feelings interfere in either way, depending on the general consensus of society in your campaign world, may think it is evil, and that may be reflected by their characters ideals & belief systems.

Unsavory to most minds, perhaps ;) but not evil. Just depends upon the individual's cultural context. I personally would not play in a RPG where this sort of thing went on, but, hey, that's just me.

I don't think cannibalism should be viewed as inherently evil but I neither think that anyone (I mean characters in the world) have ever been exposed to "positive" cannibalism. Like you said, evil humanoids tend to feast on the flesh of the fallen, and that "stigma" will probably (and should, IMO) follow your character all his life.

By your description, I assume the other party members do not know of your "habits" or "beliefs". They should be shocked.

You said the Paladin will bear the responsability of the "crime". Has the Paladin lost his powers? Did he offend his god? If not, then, if I was the Paladin, I'd be offended firstly by your lack of faith. Surely his god will not abandon him after he did the right thing.

If the Paladin has lost his powers and has accepted that he must pay for his sins, then, if I was playing the Paladin, I'd let you eat me.

One other thing about eating parts of you fallen comrades: it kinda ruins any chance at getting raised (but not resurrected...).

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Well, it's not like I'm planning on describing the munching bite by bite. I think I will probably take the body into the wilderness for a few days, then come back with a large belly and a *burp*.

The Paladin has admit wrongdoing (committing a highly unlawful act) but to my knowledge has not lost her powers (but then, I haven't really asked).

And by eating the Paladin first, maybe I can get her to talk to the other members on my behalf ("you know, eating people isn't really that wrong, if you have the person's permission beforehand...")

Randcortin, that's fine for you since you're doing it in your game and I'm not a part of your playing group. I'm just saying, is all. Doesn't suit my taste and I'd probably bow out of a game where it happened. No offense intended toward you.

See, this is an example of where our cultural upbringings makes us close-minded and weak. Just imagine all that food we're wasting! Everyone should read Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land in order to broaden their sensibilities. You may think that it's barbaric, but maybe it's we who are the barbarians...

Only if you murder them to get it. If you're starving and that guy next to you dies, you'd be dumb not to eat him.
