Is compuer role-playing dead?

I have been playing MMORPG's on and off and I find nothing that feels like a true sit-down advneture in D&D. I have recently discovered text-based games, most notable being Gemstone IV, but it charges a fee to play.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good free online text based games. I would like to find one where everyone is starting out and I have a chance to learn the game with others. I recently found a beta that is soon to open for a free one called borderkeep at www.crpgresource.com/borderkeep.html and I have also tried M.U.M.E

Try IRC. There are tons of freeform and otherwise RPG's on the tons of IRC servers out there. I'm sure you can find SOMEONE to game with.

You might also wish to try http://www.mudconnect.com/. There are several text-based MUSHes, MUXs and such that offer a wide variety in online RP. You'll want a client like MUSHClient or SimpleMU to start off with, then just go exploring and find a game that's right for you. Crucible City is an online Mutants and Masterminds MU located at 4.23.75.98, port 4626. After the climactic disintergration of Treyvan, I'm not sure where you'd find D&D 3E/OGL games but MUDconnect shuold be able to help you.

Neverwinter Night is considered by many, including myself, to be the closest thing to tabletop D&D you can get on the computer. No monthly fee either.

If you don't think there are any cool Computer RPGs (not MMORPGs) made still, take a look at Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's not fantasy, but it's very, very cool.

I second Neverwinter Nights, though one must find a good server for anything beyond hack-n-slash. Plus there are the fan-made modules to download for some servers too. Then there are the two expansion packs if you want more goodies.
I found nice open-ended one called the Land of Nordock. Its been fun so far; has a whole bunch of nifty things to do instead of just leveling up.

As for the MUDs, I use to play Gemstone III before it moved off AOL long time back. Too bad it costs $$$ to play. I still remember my old 6th level ranger being killed by a rabid squirrel. Those were the days!
I also tried a MUD that appeared in Dragon magazine called Medievia. Was fun playing, but it didn't have the same feel as Gemstone III.

I have found that Star Wars Galaxies offers a lot of roleplaying opportunities. It takes a bit of work to track down the right roleplaying community on the different servers - Chiamera and Starsider come to mind as good spots - but if you hook up with the roleplayers there you can have tons of roleplaying fun in a world with amazing graphics. Anyone soiled by EQ should try it out.
