Is D&D as we know it dead?

DnD as you have always known it is now called Pathfinder.

4E is some other game that now has the branding, but the game you knew that has evolved since 1974 is now Pathfinder.
Ridiculous. Pathfinder is just D&D 3.75, and is essentially .25 upgrades behind 4E.

Demonking, you're right in that mechanically, 4e isn't like the D&D that is familiar. Reading through the books, it gives a different impression than the D&D you're probably used to. But as many others have said, give it a shot in play. It FEELS like D&D when you play it, moreso than anything we've had since the early 1990s. It is more narrative-focused and exception based, but you know what? Thats an awesome thing- it keeps the PCs on their toes, and keeps the world from being boiled down to a cool new feat, power, spell or magic item the players get their hands on.

Give it a shot- at the worst you don't like it and go back to playing whatever edition you do like. At best, you (like many of us) discover the passion and fun for the game that you grew up with! Its like being reunited with your best friend you haven't seen since childhood! :)

Wasn't there an edict from the mods to stop all the "edition wars" style posts for a month? Last time I checked, that would be sometime in July.

Mods: enforce your ban on this stuff or you risk a lot of people leaving this site in droves.

I appreciate your concern, but I don't remember Russ making you a moderator. If you do have a problem, please report it through the "report bad post" function, located in the bottom left corner of each forum post, so that the mods can deal with it appropriately. Thank you.

That said, we mods have requested to let the "Edition Wars" threads rest for a bit. We may reopen "edition comparisons" in the future, especially calm and well-reasoned ones, but the atmostphere is a bit too tense for it right now. I appreciate most everyone being as calm and well-reasoned as they've been in this one up to now, though. I'll close this thread.
