Is Dungeon any good?

When 3E came out, I let my subscription die. It seemed like their "back to the dungeon" theme translated to "gone with the plot". :\

Is the magazine still like that? Is it better? How many adventures per magazine nowadays? And they threw Polyhedron out of Dungeon, didn't they?

:sputters: Is Dungeon any good? Heavens yes! Three adventures each month, plus other useful features. It's an excellent value for your money. And yes, Polyhedron is gone.

Why not go to your news stand and pick up a single issue so you can judge for yourself?

What Buttercup said!

I've been w/ Dungeon since #1 though I too have let my subscription go to support MFLG (plus the issues aren't as likely to get mangled by the good old USPS). I'm elated w/ the new Dungeon minus the Polyhedron material. I just always felt like I was buying 1/2 of a magazine. Go ahead & pick up an issue, I'm confident that you'll find it an excellent value.

I'll echo the general sentiment here: Dungeon is excellent. Just take a look at adventures such as "The Lich-Queen's Beloved" (#100), "Maure Castle" (#112), and of course the Adventure Path, if you don't believe me.

Three adventures per month? So I take that to mean that it's gone monthly, and things like SideTreks are gone?

Oh, and I certainly would stop by my FLGS and pick up a copy, but my FLGS isn't so L :( Actually, I just went there last night, and they didn't have either Dungeon or Dragon magazine! Neither did Barnes and Noble... there's a conspiracy to force me to just gamble on a subscription and hope I like it.

But the way you all seem to think, I might just have to pick up a subscription.

Any other advice on if Dungeon is worth it?

Here's why I think you should get a subscription (no, I don't work for WotC or Paizo). :)

Let's say you thumb through the issues every month and end up picking up 5 issues a year, that's gonna cost you somewhere around $35. A yearly subscription costs $39. So, even if you don't use much of the other 7 issues, you could probably find a way to use some of the NPCs or other material from them--making it worth your while.

You sound like you might not be a big fan of dungeon crawls. Most adventures they publish generally head to some sort of dungeon at some point, so you might want to check a couple of issues out before subscribing. As far as quality goes, adventures are generally average or better, and you occasionally get a real gem. Even the adventures you can't use often contain something salvageable. I didn't get the magazine before 3E came out, so I really can't make a comparison of before and after, but their current format is a good buy for me.

Poly is gone, for better of worse.

Now, as for "gone with the plot", I'm not sure what you mean. I haven't seen a dungeon yet where characters were just plopped into an entrance without explanation. So what do you actually expect in terms of a plot? Do you want some roleplaying encounters? You'll find those. Do you want the villain to have some nefariously brilliant master plan? You can find those too, but they're generaly of the sort that the party doesn't actually have to figure anything out in order to reach the climax. They can just kill everybody in the dungeon.

Dungeon Magazine is the best value for your money in all of RPG gaming. That statement stands without qualification of any kind. Period.

I agree.

I was very disappointed when they scrapped the Poly stuff, and I'm still not certain I like everything in the new format. Despite this, I have yet to get a single issue which had nothing I could use in it.

Oops, scratch that. The recent issue with "Maure Castle" in it wasn't of any use to me - dungeon crawls that big would just put my players to sleep. But apart from that, it's solid.
