Is it over for me?

I can't say this is the most legitimate way of find a group, but it could work for you. (I know I would give advice to anyone looking for a group in Atlanta)

First, scan for members with high posts counts in the messageboards you frequent. You might even post a message asking if there are any gamers in your area (San Diego). Don't even start to ask if they are looking for players.

If you find a few who look particularly dedicated (a peruse through the messageboard threads can help besides postcount), and are in your area, then ask them for some help. Give a good description of what you are looking for and I think you'll probably get it.

By being in a big city are within range of a great group. It's not as if there are very few good gamers around. (like in... say northern alaska, or Moscow :p )

Gaming seems to be very area-dependant. Some areas, the gamers just don't "get out" much. When I moved here to T-town I was looking for a new group, and I got lots of leads but no firm hits.

Then a spot opened up in a group about 50 minutes away that I'd talked to on ENWorld. Been gaming with them. They weren't really "advertising" and I just happened to have moved into the area as something came up and a spot opened, so there you go.

They are also the fastest to point out your mistakes to prove their superior knowledge; either game related or all the way down to simple typing errors.

There's plenty of 20-something career drivin guys that you might actually get along with.

Um, I think you meant career-driven . . . :p

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Dude, we should hang out sometime! :p

Andok, seems to be a fairly common problem.. we share the same story...
My time in SoCal was mostly spent at a game shop near Camp Pendleton, a solid mix of all walks of life and ages. Unfortunately that shop is closed as the owners chose to retire.

I echo the contention of patience and would point out that most regular posters on this board are about the age category we would be looking for.

According to that ENworld Map that wasn't working last time I checked, I have 3 Enworld neighbors here in chilly MN...

Other folks have made good suggestions, just keep the faith.. and don't get rid of the books. To expensive to replace them :)

I've seen a few older gamers get it in their head that because their older and have kids or a busy job that everything revolves around them. You must play at their house, on their hours on their time and if they have to cancel at the last minute, too bad.

Seen that all too often.

The other part of that is that I've seen too many married people come to think that there is something seriously wrong with single men and thus, they feel "uncomfortable" or become highly judgmental about them (ahem. Wink wink, nudge, nudge. Say no more.)

Or perhaps you're simply a self-hating Dork who takes it out on other Dorks. After all, only Dorks like us play D&D. Mature, sophisticated adult married men give up such adolecent pursuits and play Fantasy Football and Golf.

Application: Fantasy Grounds

I find that the program Fantasy Grounds.

fantasygrounds.com

Lets me play over the internet in much the same way I used to play over the tabletop. Its not perfect by a long shot but I think its a great way of getting a game together when everyone is so far apart or you don't know them.

I play 3-4 hrs on a given night and that would be my driving time to get to my best friends house for this sort of thing.

I'd give it a shot (think the proggie is $35 at RPGNow) I'm thinking its the way I want to do it for now.

Hi there
I have visited San Diego lots of times, have relatives that live there. I know for a fact of several gaming groups. As well as the couple of good game shops. I think you should be able to find someone to game with or I can try to point you in directions better...Tad

I have 3 high school friends who all game who live in Minneapolis in fact...well the SP side now I think...that is a huge gaming place...went to that one shop close to the University wayyyy back in the '89 range....and it is still open far as I know....Tad

Just once I want to go to a cocktail party and hear some guy with hiswife on his arm and a highball in his hand be like, "so there we was... Bagzil the wizard, Durfkin the cleric, and Regina, my 17th level Barbarian princess in her chainmail bikini +3..."
