Is it possible to make up for less magic with higher ability scores?

Any of you have any experience with lower magic item games where the DM gave higher character ability scores/feats/abilities instead?

Do you think it would work?

I'm wondering how to proceed with my next lower magic game.

Thanks for any comments.

While I've not tried it myself, I do believe such a thing would work. It would require that the DM give feats, as well as ability "bumps" far more regularly than the current game suggests.

As to precisely how often, well, someone would have to sit down and calculate the numbers, see how bonus feats and higher abilities stack up against the "big six" items at various levels and magic item values. So far, I haven't felt up to doing the work, but it certainly is doable.

I'd also suggest allowing certain feats to stack, or to be taken more than once, or creating new feats to fill some magic item gaps. For instance, I think the Weapon Focus/Improved Weapon Focus chain would need a few more levels to truly make up for a dearth of magic weapons.

Kamikaze Midget has posted a system like this, with granted level-based Enhancement bonuses to ability scores, attack rolls and damage and resistance bonuses to saves. Basiclly replacing the 'big 6' magic items.

I'm playing in a low magic game right now where the DM instituted Chris Schubert's "It's you, not your gear" rules:

Stephen “Shoe” Schubert, Developer
It’s You, Not Your Gear: Treasure is reduced 10-15% and permanent ability score boosting items are banned. Instead, characters get a stat increase at every even level (instead of every four levels) and a feat at every odd level.

It's been somewhat humorous, sometimes, because we played a lot of high level, high octane, high fantasy, high magic games for a while and the DM completely creamed us with most of the combat encounters for a while until he got used to the lower magic level.

Em,

I run most of my Scarred Lands games with low magic item counts. The extra boot in ability scores do help. I am not sure about granting extra feats however. That is something else in entirely to my POV about "Lower magic, better characters."

Why? The only thing that would make it inherently monky* off the top of my head is that the exalted bonus doesn't stack with armor bonus, and I'd just change it to an enhancement bonus to armor. Your enhancement bonuses to attack apply to your weapon.

*Hehe. Monkey.

How about giving everyone the equivelent benefits of the Vow of Poverty feat, without the requisites?

There's nothing wrong with the Vow of Poverty, but it removes character choice. Everyone has the exact same abilities and power-ups as everyone else.

That's why we chose the more feats / stat bumps route.
