As frankthedm hinted at, traditionally, the main goal of becoming a lich is escaping death due to old age. in most campaigns I've been in, this is simply not a concern for a PC and thus you would be missing out on the main advantage and cause for the LA.

Would have to be halflings or gnomes. Human Dread Necromancers give extra penalties when dual-wielding.

Have you looked at the Dread Necromancer as an option?

I don't own Libris Mortis, though I've seen the Dread Necromancer in action. Part of it is that I won't be doing much with actual undead. I'm trying to make this character a challenge to play. Part of that is using Evocation as one of my prohibited schools and trying to make up for it with Necromancy. I probably should get LM though. I'm betting it has a lot of Necro spells for me to play with.

Downside: High opportunity cost. 4 caster levels lost. Expensive phylactery.

Upside: You can't die. Even if you die you can't die.


...yeah I'd say it's worth it, assuming you're cool wit the whole being a walking corpse thing. All boils down to patience. If you can't stomach being a little patient, don't bother going lich. If you can wait a little while for the big payoff, by all means. Lich away.
