Is my DM a munchkin?

I somehow found my way back to the forums...I think. I'm assuming this is the same forum that existed about a year ago on Eric Noah's website.

Anyways, I think my DM may be a munchkin. My 5th level character (Barb/Fighter) just got the vestment of faith (damage reduction 5/+5). Seeing that the item costs 76000 gp. I feel weird about my character having it. Granted there is no resurrection in the campaign world but still....

Question: Should I ask my if he meant for a PC to have a 76000 gp item at 5th level or was it a mistake.

Question: Was my dm a munchkin in having a NPC that a 5th level party was supposed to kill wear that item (making for a tougher enconter with lower Xp.)

Normally, I'd tell my DM strait up that this was unusual but he's getting married this Saturday and I didn't want to bother him as he's under enough pressure as is. So, I'm asking general dnd community about their opinion because it's been nagging me.

PS. In the old boards I think there was a crazy group of people who dubbed themselves the Pantheon. Whatever happened to them. I've only read the general discussion and the rules board, sorry if they are obviously thriving in another topic.

I don't think your GM's a munchkin (can GMs be munchkin? - usual phrase is 'Monty Haul'). You said yourself there's no resurrection in your game - a surefire sign of a non-munchkin GM IMO! :)
If he keeps on handing out such gifts throughout the campaign that'd be different, but an occasional boon is reasonable & not likely to damage the game, especially if your PC is otherwise not very powerful.

yes, i was a part of the pantheon

The pantheon was disbanded due to the efforts of the Evil Plan (tm) and the horde of the Lobester Infestation Invasion (tm). I know hold the key as the Pantheons former loyal servant, the archangel of the pamtheon, God of David Boreanaz and Jigglypuff.

I await the day of their return as i will give them the Keys.

I guess I asked if my DM was a munchkin because he revels in TPK( well, almost TPK since once person usually survives to keep the story going). We play along because the story is great.

We only survived the encounter where my character got the vestment of faith because of a house-rule that says rolling a natural 20 in a critical threat check results in another critical threat check and I managed to roll 3 20's in a row followed by a 19 resulting in about 60 points of damage. I wouldn't say monthy hall because one person has a +1 longsword and no one has any masterwork items or the gold to buy them with. You can imagine my shock when I found out that the 3rd magic item we found was worth 76000 when before I was complaining that first level characters would be richer after 2 encounters. I have a bad feeling my character will be disintergrated.

PS. I really enjoyed the nonsensical (at least to me) ramblings of the Pantheon. Boo to the evil plan whatever that was. I hope they return soon.

Your choises:

A: Give the item to the nearest temple (for other stuff, enough to increase the effectivity of the whole party)

B: Consider it a side effect of the wedding, shrug and keep it :D

C: Start a new and improved Pantheon!

Munchkin?

First, "Munchkin" is a term without a set definition so it's hard to understand what you are asking. Are you asking if you have a bad DM? If so, there's too little information here.

Secondly, why you are asking it? If the party is being challenged and you guys are having fun, then keep it going. It's all good. Perhaps the vest has some hidden purpose? Maybe you'll need it when you get attacked by some really tough monsters.

As a player, you shouldn't worry too much about the Gold Piece Value of magic items. So what if the treasure given isn't exactly in line the DMG guidelines? That's the DM's domain and he has the power to give out more or less treasure as he sees fit. Again, if you're having fun and being challenged, then he's doing his job well.

Hmm. I had a group with an average of 100K gp per player at lvl5.

Yes, I gave them a lot.

But yes, they needed it. I loved the look on their faces when they stepped into the next trap.

And I awarded lots less XPs than usual.

If your DM wants major battles like that without hopping the PCs up three levels after each encounter... that's a way to go.

Besides: Those puny DR5 won't save your @$$ even against some puny level1 barbarians with greataxes.
