It says "such as" which blunts the "need." Otherwise, I would "need" a pencil. Given I always use pens and never use pencils, I would have to stop playing D&D.

Everything is core. PHB1, PHB2, MM, MM2, DMG, AV, MP, AP, Dragon, Dungeon. Everything.

Core != Required to play. That's just the PHB, MM, and DMG.

Core = Official material designed or "debugged" by the WotC design staff that requires no special permission to use in baseline D&D/RPGA events.

Core != Required to be permitted in your game. Core or not, the DM's word is still final.

What bugs me about this is that they're muddying the accepted contextual definition of the term - generally, the minimum materials required to run a game - when it's not necessary. Wouldn't it be simpler to say that for D&D events and RPGA games anything published by WotC is allowed? Whenever I see linguistic gymnastics like this it seems like marketing triumphing over common sense.

I was not being selective and was not holding stuff out to prove jack, First paragraph on page six lists mini's as required to play. Now at the bottom of page six it lists D&D mini's , I think that was a flaw, and should have just been mini's. I have no issue with them saleing their own product, but it makes it seem like you need them. In the explanation it gives other ideal but bad wording all round there

And on page 7, it goes into detail saying specifically that you don't need specifically DDMs. Given that the detailed description of what they mean when they say you "need" DDMs is immediately adjacent, ignoring it is by definition selective quoting.

I was not talking about DDM's but mini's in general. It's listing of DDM's is a separate issue and has nothing to doe with what I quoted. I said Mini's not DDM's .

So no I was not being selective I said mini's the book says mini's I fail to see how that is selective


Edit: I think I see where the confusion is here. I jumbled the two issues together in the part you quoted.

1. Was the mini's I was not talking of DDM, maybe the guy I was responding to was but I ment mini's as a whole. Which the book does say you need

2. Was the DDM on the list, I think having the list say DDM in stead of just mini's was a mistake, and they should have pushed DDM where they did in the explanation but not in the list it's self

More like : Miniatures or markers: You need something to track movment , Miniatures work great for this, In fact we have several lines of prepainted mini's tailor made for your D&D game

I never meant it as a you have to have DDM's but rather that the books says you need mini's
