Is Star Wars a dying game?

The disturbing element of all this is how, in the Star Wars mini game, there are no Roleplaying stats on the back of the cards like in the D&D minis game...just skirmish stats.

Mmmm, I wasn't aware of that as the mini's aren't available just yet (roll on next week) here in the UK.

Thanks for all the responses to my question though folks - it has bouyed my spirits a little that things just might pick up after May - only time will tell :)

I'm a big fan of the SWRPG; it's what got me back into gaming.

I can definitely see the release schedule slowing down in preparation for a relaunch after the third movie.

Also, do you really need more sourcebooks. I buy sourcebook after sourcebook for D&D, but for some reason the basics (and a lot of non-RPG source material) are all our campaign really needs.

One thing I would like to see after the prequel-era sourcebook: a sourcebook for the Old Republic era combining some of the less outrageous elements of the Tales of the Jedi stories with the excellent material developed for KOTOR. The Old Republic is currently touched on in the Jedi and Dark Side books, but I want more!

As for the miniatures, they're neat, but I prefer using action figures. They require more space during and between games, but they're not much more expensive when bought en masse on eBay, and they make every game feel totally cinematic.

Unless the SW minis are much more affordable, like the Little Green Army Men. Yes, a true-blue mini collector would scoff at such plastic things, but for roleplayers and casual wargamers, they're just game pieces or props (at least better looking than using dice or paper clips to represent figures).

Personally, I just use lego minifigs for miniatures work in Star Wars, they fit nicely on a 1-inch map, thanks to the Lego Star Wars line there are lots of thematically appropriate figures and pieces, and they are customizable (in the last SW game I ran, every PC had a custom little figure for his PC).

The game doesn't need new products to stay in print & alive. (& there's plenty of proof that a game doesn't need to stay in print to stay alive either.)

I'm betting WotC will keep the SW RPG in print until Ep. III is released on DVD. If they don't, it'll be because Ep. III's theatrical release didn't generate enough sales. Beyond that...impossible to see the future is.

I seriously doubt the license will end up with WEG again. Crazier things have happened, but I can't think of a precendent for a license returning to a previous licensee.

I believe there is a very plausible reason behind an NDA regarding Ep 7-9 ESPECIALLY if there is not going to be any 7-9.

Lucas hates rumormongering. I have absolutey no doubt that he would put a gag order on folks involved with his projects just to shut them up even if there is nothing to actually talk about.

Very typical behavior for Lucas.

Onlooker #1: He is... the Messiah!

Brian: Look, I am not the Messiah. Now: would you just all go away and leave me alone?

Onlooker #2: Only the true Messiah would deny his divinity.

Brian: FINE. Alright. I am the Messiah: now bugger off.

Crowd: He IS the Messiah!!!

Can't win with you people, can he?

From a guy who drafts NDAs for his day job: People don't ask lawyers to draft them and lawyers don't ask people to sign them unless they are for a purpose. Not even Lucas.

That is NOT to say Episode 7-9 are *planned*. But there clearly have been discussions.

I think there will be more SW movies in the future. But the real question is who will be producing/directing them. SW is a big money maker and I can see a variety of spinoffs, sort of like Star Trek. Obviously, I doubt Lucas would let the major players be used by other directors, but I can see him allowing new movies with new stories and plots.
