Is taking a PrC equivalent to being in a clan?

Basically you just keep following the chart in the Player's Handbook. If a character is a 5th level rogue/1st level assasin they are a total 6th level character and would have to be at the experience point total for that level. To go up to 2nd level in assassin or 6th in rogue, they would have to go up to the 7th level exp mark found in the player's handbook. Each class doesn't have separate exp, it is a total of all the levels the character has.

Hope that clears it up for ya.
So if my Alchemist/Thief decides to "take" a PrC he's still an Alchemist/Thief? Would he then be an Alchemist/Thief/_________? And he'd still be able to gain levels in the Alchemist and Thief classes? Would the PrC level ever surpass the Alchemist or Thief levels?

He would then be an Alchemist/Thief/______. Yeah, he would still be able to gain levels in any of the other classes. There could possibly be some multiclass problems that would arise depending on the race your character is, but I am going to assume your character is a human(or half-elf). Also, your PrC levels could surpass your class levels, and there would be no problems from doing so.

Just to further my point on the other post, if your character is an alchemist 4/thief 3/ and then prc 2 the total character level would be 9 and to go up a level in any of the classes, the character would have to learn enough experience points to reach the 10th level point on the chart. Never heard of an alchemist class, btw.

Whoops! It was detailed in either 2E Skills & Powers or Spells & Magic. Perhaps I should find a 3.x equivalent core Alchemist class before I dabble in any PrC, huh? LoL

Yes, he's human. He actually started out as a Thief/Apothecary using the Apothecary rules in the 2E "Specialists & Sages". I later on found the class to be too weak and so switched to Alchemist.

Well...perhaps you could take those as levels in wizard, they would be able to be an alchemist. If you dont' want your character with magic(I cannot remember the alchemist so I'm not sure if they have spells), you can go with an expert from the DMG. Slightly underpowered, but can give you a good amount of skill points. Especially, if taken at first level.

Other than that you could check around the web..I'm sure there's an alchemist class somewhere.

I'd like to point out that although PrC sometimes express membership to an organization, having levels in a PrC shouldn't be the only way to be a member. Also, the number of levels you have in the PrC should give no indication to the possition you occupy in the organization.
