D&D (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

Is the 2024 rules update a new edition?

I'm going with no, because it's not being marketed as such. The playtest shows it's clearly based on the 5E chassis, so at best it's a half edition. You could play 3.5 with 3E stuff... with a bit of difficulty, which I expect to be the same with the Revised Edition.

If I can listen to audio of a game and tell if the GM is using the 2024 ruleset instead of the 2014 then it's a big enough change that it should be a new edition.

Since it's based on 5e....it should be labeled 5.X where X is determined by how many times they want to tweek 5e until they move on to a completely new game.

On the one hand-
Everybody's talking all this stuff about D&D (now now)
Why don't they just let 5e live?
WOTC don't need permission, make their own decisions
That's, that's WOTC's prerogative

What's the matter with the edition we're playing?
Can't you tell that your game is old?
Maybe I should buy an old lead mini?
Welcome back to the age of orcs.

Where have you been hidin' out honey?
You can't play trashy 'till you spend a lot of money.

Everybody's talking about the new revised vision.
But it's still just D&D to me.

The #1 rule of the internet: you either absolutely love something with every fiber of your being or you hate it with the fury of a thousand white hot suns. There is no in between.
At first I had a seething hatred for this, but I've really warmed up to the idea and I love it.

I'm honestly a little surprised that anyone is taking obvious marketing ploys seriously. It isn't in WotC's perceived best interests to trumpet this as a new edition right now, so we're seeing a lot of copy about how there's no "editions" any more and everything in the garden will be lovely hereafter. Let's have a hearty round of Kumbayah!

Let me assure you that the moment it becomes in their perceived best interests to do otherwise, they will be happy to sell us "6E". I'm not accusing them of dishonesty, exactly - no more than any other marketing ploy.

It isn't "divisive" to notice that the changes in the rules are far-reaching enough that we'll need some way of talking about them and comparing them to the previous version. "5.5" is good enough for me, but ultimately it's the community's practice that will decide.

There needs to be an ‘I don’t care’ option. Sure, I could just not post because I don’t care, but if you don’t care on the internet you need a way to tell people you don’t care, else how will they know?

Ok, that’s about as far as I can bring myself to engage with this silly pedantry. Thank you for creating a silo for it, let’s hope it stops spilling out over the rest of the forum.
