Is the Christmas Tree really dead?

Depends on how you define Chrismas Tree?

There are still all the slots and "expected magical items by level". But there are some big and important changes, because there are only 3 items that are "necessary" for a character. This means you can be stingy on the other kind of magic you give out. Or you can give magic out and have it not seen sold at the first opportunity for a better stat-booster or AC-booster.

I think that was exactly the kind of problem the design team wanted to adress - it was the best idea to buy all the same magical items. It was not necessarily a problem that you lit up like a christmas tree under a Detect Magic (though that might be original definition), but that everyone got the Stat-boosters and AC-boosters and other items were an aftertoughts.

There are a lot of cool and flavorful items, but if the Fighter had to choose between upgrading a Belt of Strength or keeping a Ring of Shooting Star, what would he take? If he had to chose between a Cloak of Arachnia and a Cloak of Resistance, what would he take?

The changed economy and the fewer "booster" items creates less incentives to sell your loot to gain the standard equipment increase. Flavorful, uncommon magical items become interesting again.
