Is the Dragon Archive CD-ROM any good?

$40? Wow, thats pretty expensive. I picked it up shortly after it came out at the local Electronics Boutique for $20. If you look around you might find it cheaper, but if you like dragon magazine it is definately worth $40 :) Not a lot of crunchy stuff you can use for 3e, but TONS of good ideas for all sorts of things.

I have to agree with the majority here, that Dragon CD-ROM Archive is a great buy. I find it indispensible, and have spent hours just reading through the articles contained therein.

My single complaint is that there should be a download to add issues 251-273, to get the last of 2E in there. Oh well. It's still a very fine product.

It's one of the very few gaming items I consider a treasure. So many of the articles, even the earliest ones, have something interesting to offer, and many of them are still very relevant. A lot of them are echoed on message boards like these today. Priceless.

Let me throw my hat in here, too -

PRICELESS.
ABSOLUTELY
FREAKIN'
PRICELESS.

It's a great resource, mainly because so many of those old articles were as much flavor as crunchy bits. Unlike the current style (which I like, don't get me wrong), the older style relied less of pictures, and the space for full artwork being used for more article space. Also, I believe the text size was a little smaller up until about 8 or 9 years ago, too, so some of those magazines were JAM-PACKED, in order to make up for the need to use lots of space for advertisement.

Well worth it.

Lew Pulsipher's "be aware, take care" article is a must-read for every D&D player about to participate in a difficult campaign, or a dungeon-style campaign, because the focus is on using every trick in the book to keep a party alive. I keep telling WotC and Anthony Valterra they ought to buy the rights to that article, update it for 3E, and PUT IT INTO THE REVISED PHB, it's that good in my eyes.

I'm another who considers it a great buy. The cartoons convert seamlessly to 3rd. Some of the article mechanics might not go as smoothly, but the ideas should. And access to all of The Ecology of... articles is worth the price of admission (Beholder, Mind Flayer, and Doppleganger being my most favored).
