Is the Illusionist Dead?

I am sincerely doubtful. The open nature of illusions would not sit very well with 4e's attempts to codify everyting and curtail out of the box power/spell uses. If there is going to see one, don't expect the 1e illusionist -- expect something focused on battlefield effects, maybe as a "controller"...

In a proper 4e version, you'd have seperate powers for seperate uses of illusions, aside from rituals which can be more free-form. The system is definitely more friendly to the idea of specialist wizards that have a different flavor than the standard wizard than 3e and 2e were. Partly because the wizard's scope has been reduced: 2e & 3e mage/wizards had access to all/nearly all arcane spells, making differentiation hard to pull off (all 1e illusionist-only spells became mage spells in 2e). And partly because everyone has a custom "spell list" in 4e that defines their combat flavor.

It looks to me very much as if the secret to this trick is attempting to 'sanitise' a username before using it for spamming.

Aw. But a true magician should never reveal his secrets! Now you've ruined it!

...if anybody is honestly curious though, head to YouTube and search for "jumping gemini". You could probably go through a whole deck with that, a few cards at a time. Just remember, practice.
