Is the Warlock the new Druid?

Ok, so I've been reading a lot of scoops about the Warlock's powers and abilities... And I'm very worried because it seems that the developers are trying to draw attention (and players) to this class. We saw something like this with the cleric and (especially) the druid at 3E, those classes went out with lots and lots of stuff to draw players attention and, as a general result, they were very "overpowered". I'm afraid that something like this is happening with the warlock, what do you think?

Not really.

Clerics and druids weren't overpowered to draw attention to the classes. The problem is that as classes that have heals and buffs, they need to have enough "stuff" left over after providing that support to still be worthwhile in their own right. So of course there were problems when some clerics or druids just used those resources on themselves instead.

I think we'll have to wait at least a year before we can decide which class is overpowered. 6 months of play should give people a basis to judge what really is powerful in the new system and what just looks like it is.

See the discussion here a few weeks ago about readers first impression of the 3e classes. The monk was so obviously designed for munchkins! All characters would start with a level of rogue for the extra skill points! It took a while before people discovered CoDzilla was staring them in the face.

I think we are seeing a lot about the warlock because the Developers really, really like the class. That said, I don't think this is necessarily going to lead to an overpowered class like a CoDzilla.

Honestly, the developers are pushing the Warlock class because the 3e Warlock got a lot of attention. So it's more, "You liked it before, well, here's the NEW, IMPROVED Warlock, baby! It's kickin' ass and taking souls!"

Also, the Warlock appears to have stolen some of the Binder's bag, and the Binder was a popular little class from 3e. It's got real sexy flavor, and the execution wasn't bad.

I think the developers think the warlock is emblematic of 4e and they spend a lot of time with it. It's also a cool class, one that dabbles in dark and perilous powers, cloaked in mystery and secrecy. I was sold on them when I heard they could forge pacts with "the stars and the darkness between them." So cool.

Unless the Warlock makes me want to throw my module in the trash and break out Spirit of the Century . . . then no, it's not the 3.5 druid.
