Is there a reason you do not take a multi-class feat

The ability you get is useless. Ignore it. Look at the skills and what M/Cing opens up in the way of feats.

Example:
Thievery is a pretty good skill to have. So, M/Cing to rogue for it is nice. Also, that opens up Surprise Knockdown, Press the Advantage and several nice feats that are rogue only.

This doesn't make M/Cing a must but it is an interesting option.

If you were going to take Skill Training: Whatever, and you could instead take Multiclass: Whatever and get the same skill, you might as well.

But if not, there's no reason to automatically take it. Why would you? Because its better that skill training? That's not a reason.

There are many reasons

1) You need to have the prerequisite stat. You might not have it until you gain some levels.
2) You don't always get to choose the skill.
3) Some of the features gained by the feat are weak like the fighters.

Multiclassing to wizard to spell focus is a nice idea for casters... until you read spell focus and realise it only applies to wizard spells. Sigh ;/

Since we're on the topic of multi-class feats. I'm going to play a non-rogue/ranger gnome and in order to take full advantage of his racial abilities I'd like to have stealth be trained. I can get that from multiclassing into ranger, which is also a cool concept for the character so I decided to take a look at their paragon paths. All of them require either the TWF or Ranged specialization, but the multiclass feat does not grant this. Can a multiclass ranger not pick one of these PPs?

There is no downside other than:

1) You can only have one (but you could retrain it later, I suppose)
and
2) You must meet certain stat requirements.

So, knock yourself out.

Stormwind Fallacy FTW.
