Is there any way around Uncanny Dodge?

The only way around the no-loss-of-dexterity thing is to call for an airstrike. No matter how uncanny his dodging his, there's no way in hell he's going to avoid an airstrike.

You can still get flanking SA if you have 4 levels above the victim in uncanny-dodge granting classes, however.

Why do you feel bad? It's the player's job to know what his character is capable of. If he forgot he had uncanny dodge, that's his/her fault. You have enough to think about.

I'll bet that player doesn't forget it again! Chalk up that encounter to a learning lesson. The Barbarian let his guard slip in a very uncommon manner. Oops. But it's not your fault.

So I screwed up tonight and had a Monk 9/Asn 8 with Improved Invisibility mess up the party Barbarian/Cleric with Shuriken and Sneak Attack. Since I've never really played a Barbarian or made an important Barbarian NPC, it didn't even cross my mind that it wouldn't work...I forgot that Barbarians get Uncanny Dodge at low level, and I wouldn't have remembered how it worked offhand anyway.

A barbarian/CLERIC? I sense a loophole. You could say the cleric's god was mad at the cleric, and so penalized him somehow. Or else it was a divine test to see if he was worthy of X. Then you can bring in roleplay stuff.

Or you could make the "special feat" only work against clerics/worshippers of the god that your god hates (assuming the monk/assassin has the opposite god) or else have a special spell or item (perhaps a one-shot) that causes the same effect.

Next time, have the barbarian climb a wall and then fire those shurikens at him while using boots of levitation. :)

Hey, if the player didn't notice, then it's his loss. Players are the ones who are supposed to rules-lawyer you, you're not supposed to have to memorize every detail of every player.

Life is like a sandwich: Some days you eat the sandwich, other days the sandwich eats you.

I second the "it's their fault" thing.

You can't possibly memorize everything about all characters and still do all the DM stuff, like managing the enemies. Of course you have to try, but if you screw something up the player has to tell you of his abilities.

Count your change immediately, no refunds later.

FWIW, me too.

Ya ferget stuff, ya pay th' consequences.

As for a new "Beat Uncanny Dodge" feat: I'd avoid making up feats to justify mistakes, if I were you.

True. Some players tend to take those feats for their characters and BAM - out of a little mistake which isn't so bad evolves a game of rules which are very bad.

Of course, my other motivation for making up a feat is because without a Feat that lets him Sneak Attack the Barbarian, the Assassin will get pasted by the Barbarian, just like all of my other NPCs. :D

But, in the interest of not being cheesy, I can chalk it up to, "You were just really surprised that the guy was invisible, had no scent (the Barbarian has Scent), and made a 10 ft. step* when a normal person would make a 5 ft. step, so it threw you off your game. You won't be caught off-guard again."
