Is there just one type of arrow?

Or you could eliminate amunition form the game as our group did.

this eliminates the need to track amunition (which was pointless cause at .15 pounds per arrow most characters can carry more than enough. It also eliminates the problem our group was having with our archer outperfroming all the melee fighters cause he would get the cleric to cast GREATER MAGIC WEAPON on 50 arrows and fire them from his magic frost bow of STR, with his rapid shot feat, for about twice the damage our melee fighters could deal out.

Bow damage is from the Bow itself not the arrow.

Shortbows do 1d6 Longbows do 1d8.

Its all about machanics of the bow. There are one basic type of arrow. If your DM wnats to make it bow typed then he can.

In real like I can use my Arrows in both my Composit bow and my Recurve with no problems at all.

Yep,
In 3rd edtion all arrows are the same, unless of corse they are magic. ;)
Damage is decided by the Bow type.
Same goes for crossbow bolts.

Same goes for crossbow bolts, except the hand crossbow, I should hope. A hand crossbow is Tiny. A heavy crossbow is Medium. I don't see how they can fire the same ammo, being two sizes apart.

HAH! That'll teach me to not carefully read the original question. Yup, there's no differentiation in 3e over arrows for different bows.

Before the player mysteriously vanished, we had an Fighter/OoBI who could deal out 4 arrows per round at a relatively low level. I think we were about 7th at the time.

We got stranded in some vast underdark cavern with no more arrows for easy purchase and after about two days of intermittent combats, the Fighter3/Barbarian3/Wiz1 and the Sorcerer8 were using all their cantrips on Mend to repair 8 or so arrows a day to keep him in two rounds of sustained fire's worth of ammunition.

After that adventure the OoBI was paranoid about his ammo and kept two Quivers of Ehlonna, plus a small bag of holding full of barrels stuffed with arrows. He kept something like 400 arrows around. While it seemed like overkill, he could pump out that many in ten minutes of sustained combat.

Useless pedantic side note: Contrasting this to history, the ancient Mongolians used to keep 300 arrows on their mounts and 100 on their person. The English longbowen of yore typically only carried a dozen.

There's a chance I'm misremembering the number.

at 7th level he'd be getting BAB +7/+2,
rapid shot +5/+5/+0

hmmm. Is there an OoBI rapid fire like ability? I could just plain be wrong. :o)
