Is this fair? -- predict the general opinion

Is this fair? -- (how will others think/feel about the scenario?)

  • Yes

    Votes: 30 16.9%
  • No

    Votes: 130 73.4%
  • Other

    Votes: 17 9.6%

I suspect the majority will think it is unfair. Personally, I'd want more info before deciding -- what, if anything, could the monk have done differently (other than not pull the lever, or roll a 20 on his save, obviously) to avoid the effect?

Oops. Sorry. I read the opening post, but got caught up in what I thought, rather than what I figured others would think.
You know, this poll is turning out to be an interesting study for how well do people read explicit and repeated instructions for an action.

Unfortunately, I should have done this poll a little differently. One, I should have had the poll track who voted what. Two, I should have worded the options as "Most people will say this scenario is fair," "Most people will say this scenario is unfair," and "The vote will be split close to even fair/unfair."

I'm only an amateur pollster.

This comes off as insulting. I'm assuming you didn't intend it that way, but I have to admit it's still kind of irritating.

I'm pretty certain that many (oarticularly those who've only played 3.x) would think it unfair.

Only a dumbass pulls the lever.

Only an idiot pulls a lever that they know is trapped.

But, hmmm... secret door with a lever beside it. You just walk away? Only an idiot walks away from a door because it has a doorknob. "Ooh, that doorknob is the obvious rout! The DM is trying to trick us! We skip it." *high fives all around* That's the smart thing to do?

Are you saying that people here will say that the scenario was not fair? Your post is confusing in this regard.
Of couse people will say it is not fair. there are more players than DMs and then you have to account for the 'mollycoddlers'.

I prefer "Kill Switches" to look like Altars to Far Raelm entities and portals to oblivion. Both located in rooms barricaded from the outside.

A simple Auguary would have said "Woe"

I dislike the trap more because it sounds like whoever built it invested wayyyy too much resourses into cranking the DC rather than any fairness issues.

My apologies. I didn’t mean an insult at all. I didn’t mean to irritate either.

I meant no insult to you or the other people who have responded with their personal opinion on the scenario rather than their “prediction” on how others would/will vote.

This poll and discussion (and the one to come) have nothing to do with Question’s thread in the Rules forum. It is not intended to be connected to or build toward that thread/scenario at all. The question of fairness/unfairness in encounter and trap scenarios is not new to the board. In fact, it’s not new to D&D discussions, even well before Internet message boards existed.
In that case, my apologies. There was a passing resemblance between the two situations that seemed to strike a chord, and I jumped to a conclusion.
